Career Interests: The Holland Codes and What Kind of Work Fits You
"What should I do with my life?" is too big a question. A better one — and a more answerable one — is: what kind of work actually energizes you? That's what career-interest research measures.
Your career interests describe the kinds of work and activity that naturally draw you in. The dominant framework, built by psychologist John Holland, sorts them into six types — Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional (RIASEC). Most people are a blend, summed up in a three-letter "Holland code." The core idea is fit: people tend to be more satisfied and to stay longer when their interests match their work — a real effect, though a modest one. Interests also happen to be remarkably stable over a life.
What career interests are
Career interests are simply the patterns in what kind of work pulls your attention and energy — whether you're drawn to building things, solving puzzles, creating, helping people, leading, or organizing. In the late 1950s, psychologist John Holland turned this into a theory that still underpins most serious career-interest tests, including the U.S. Department of Labor's free O*NET database. His key move was elegant: classify both people and jobs using the same six types, so you can systematically match one to the other.
Holland also noticed the six types aren't random — they sit in a specific order, where neighbors are similar and opposites are least alike. He arranged them in a hexagon, and decades of studies across many countries have confirmed the shape holds up.

Realistic

Your Holland code & why fit matters
Because almost everyone is a mix, you're not assigned one type but a three-letter code — your top three in order, like IAS or ESC. That code is your interest signature, and it can be matched against occupations that carry the same code (which is exactly what O*NET lets you do).
The theory's central claim is congruence: the closer the match between your interests and your work environment, the better your outcomes tend to be — more satisfaction, better performance, and staying longer. Research broadly supports this, and there's a telling pattern in the data: people who change jobs often tend to drift toward roles that fit them better over time.
Now the honest caveat, because it changes how you should use any career test. The congruence-to-satisfaction effect is real but modest — meta-analyses put the average correlation around 0.17, and Holland himself acknowledged its limited explanatory power. Interest–performance links are a bit stronger, around 0.20–0.25. In plain terms: fit meaningfully tilts the odds, but it doesn't determine your happiness at work — pay, management, colleagues, and circumstances all matter too, and there's wide variety within any type (the "Investigative" bucket holds both theoretical physicists and clinical psychologists). Treat your interests as a strong compass, not a GPS with one destination.

Do your interests change?
Less than you might expect. Vocational interests take shape in childhood and adolescence and then settle into one of the most stable patterns in all of psychology — more stable, in fact, than most personality traits. Big experiences can nudge them, and the intensity of an interest can grow or fade, but the broad shape of what draws you tends to persist across decades. That stability is a feature: it means a clear read on your interests now is likely to stay useful for a long time.
